Batik Tie-Dye Shibori Multi Cover Tapestry Fabric Cloth Navy Sri Lanka

This fabric was purchased in Sri Lanka.

Its large size makes it versatile for use as a multi-cover or for interior decoration. It can also be worn as fashion, such as a sarong or pareo.

Each piece is hand-dyed by artisans, and even with the same pattern, each item has a subtly different expression, which is part of its charm.

This is a type of wax-resist dyeing called Batik, or a type of Tie-dye (shibori dyeing). Sri Lankan batik is characterized by its vibrant colors and patterns resembling radiating suns (which can also represent a sun deity).

In Sri Lanka, there is a custom of wearing clothes in the lucky color of the year as formal attire during the Sinhala & Tamil New Year in April. This fabric is used for the sarong, a traditional garment worn around the waist by men, and for redda, a wrap skirt worn by women.
