Antique French 1880s Point de Paris Lace & Small Floral Wreath Embroidery Runner
A beautiful antique piece from France.
This runner/mat features a chic and elegant design, trimmed with bobbin lace in the Point de Paris technique, showcasing floral patterns. It is adorned with small floral embroidery, reminiscent of rosettes, intertwined with ribbon frames.
This piece is said to have been recreated around 1880, reviving designs and details popular during the Rococo and Baroque periods of the 1700s.
The fabric is a sheer, fine-count organic material. The raised, voluminous ribbon appliqué appears to be done in the Madeira technique. Forget-me-nots, small cherry-blossom-like flowers, and ribbons intertwine, creating a delicate effect enhanced by the eyelet openwork.
The entire trim is edged with elegant Point de Paris lace. At the center, resembling a fountain or a large vase, are reliefs of flowers and leaves, similar to hydrangea, intricately woven.
The transition between the fabric and the lace is also elaborate, with the curvilinear floral patterns of Point de Paris framing and ladder lace.
The entire edge is delicately finished with small picot lace embroidery.
The mesh base is a net weave, with threads twisted and crossed in a diagonal lattice, resembling a Star of David. It is also robust and strong.
The color is a clean, transparent ivory, with a subtle hint of pale yellow, creating a nuanced ecru.
The linen fabric is very smooth, supple, and crisp, with a cool, slightly stiff texture, indicating high quality. Both the base and the outlining threads have a faint sheen and luster.
Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements of this handmade item.
Long side: 44 cm x Short side: 30 cm
Weight: Approximately 12g
There are two mended areas with darned repairs (the two rightmost images in the final picture). Personally, I find them to blend in with the main fabric and floral embroidery and to be hardly noticeable. Otherwise, the item is in beautiful condition with no scratches or stains, but please allow for minor oversights.
It would be lovely to display objects, bisque dolls, figurines, or your favorite tea set on top. Framing it would also be beautiful.
A piece that exudes mature loveliness.
We hope you will continue to use it for many years to come.
