Vintage 1960s Large Ichimatsu Doll and Stand

This is a traditional Japanese Ichimatsu doll (Ichimatsu ningyo). These dolls are celebrated for their realistic, child-like features and have a long history as both toys and collectible art.  Ichimatsu dolls typically have heads, hands, and feet made of gofun—a smooth, porcelain-like paste created from crushed oyster shells and glue.  The doll is dressed in a kimono. A defining feature of Ichimatsu dolls is that their clothing is typically removable, allowing owners to change their outfits according to the season.  The name Ichimatsu comes from a famous 18th-century Kabuki actor, Sanogawa Ichimatsu I, who was known for his beauty and for wearing a specific checkered pattern (now called the Ichimatsu pattern).  In 1927, these dolls became international symbols of goodwill during the Friendship Doll exchange between Japan and the United States, where 58 large, ornate Ichimatsu dolls were sent to America.  In Japan, dolls are often believed to protect children by absorbing misfortune. Displaying them, particularly during the Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival), is a way for families to wish for the healthy growth and happiness of their daughters.
