Its name at the time was The Basket Box, marking the beginning of the history of hamper baskets.

If I recall correctly, the explanation was that in the past, when Britain had colonies all over the world, Christmas hampers sent to family and loved ones in those colonies were delivered via long sea voyages of 2-3 months. This box shape, which could be transported horizontally and stacked, was its original form. The fact that Christmas hamper catalogs used to be released in the summer, even just over a decade ago, is said to be a remnant of needing to allow time for these long sea voyages.
