In the 1970s, rugby gained global popularity, partly due to the success of the New Zealand national team.
Canterbury began receiving orders for rugby jerseys from club teams worldwide. While creating team jerseys in various colors and patterns, they also generated a large amount of fabric scraps during production.
There's a story that Canterbury then sewed these leftover scraps together to create unique jerseys and donated them to local rugby schools.
These one-of-a-kind jerseys, known as UGLY, became a popular fashion item among rugby players and are now a part of Canterbury's identity.
