This cane is made from a lustrous, rare wood known as Kaba-no-ki (birch family), which is exceptionally hard, dense, elastic, and resilient among Japanese woods. It has virtually no weaknesses except for low water resistance. (Dry specific gravity: 0.9-0.98)
As its name suggests, it is so hard and resilient that axes have been known to break when felling it. Some describe its strength as tenacious, tough, hard, dense, and beautiful.
It grows in mountainous regions above 500m in cold climates, with an annual growth rate of only about 0.2mm. Because it cannot be planted systematically and is an endangered species, large pieces of wood are rarely available on the market. While canes made from Onoorekanba (a type of birch) are available, they are mostly just the handles.
The grain of this cane features spiral patterns resembling ribbon-like figuring.
This cane is made from a single piece of wood, with no joints.
Also known as: 斧折樺 (Onoorekanba), ミネバリ (Minebari)
(The name Minebari is said to refer to its resilience or to growing on mountain peaks, among other theories.)
Wood Symbolism: (These are not definitive but represent various meanings)
Money Tree for business prosperity, symbolizing steady growth even in harsh environments.
Marital Harmony due to its unbreakable hardness.
Success in Studies, Career, and Advancement for wishing an unbreakable spirit.
Please purchase only if you understand that this is a natural wood product crafted by hand without the use of machinery.
Total length: approx. 850mm, Handle length: approx. 220mm.
Maximum (minimum) thickness: approx. 26mm (at both grip and tip).
Head front-to-back length: approx. 75mm, Shaft front-to-back length: approx. 35mm, Weight: 762g.
To prevent brittleness from repeated oil applications, the finish uses Kinuka (a rice bran-based coating that enhances the wood's transparency), and waterproofing is achieved with beeswax cream only.
The cane tip is a replacement from Amazon: semme-jp crutch tip, 28mm.
