SACD Sibelius Complete Symphonies Rattle Berlin Philharmonic (Japanese Commentary Included)
SACD - 5 Discs. Rattle's Sibelius Cycle, which captivated the Berlin audience, is finally released on SACD!
The complete symphonies of Sibelius by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle will be released as SACD Hybrid discs from Berlin Phil Recordings.
Rattle recorded the complete Sibelius symphonies with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra between 1981 and 1987, marking his second complete cycle recording. As an Englishman, Rattle has had a fondness for Sibelius since childhood. He even conducted Sibelius' Symphony No. 5 for his debut as a conductor with the Liverpool Philharmonic, demonstrating that Sibelius is a composer particularly close to Rattle's heart. This Sibelius cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic was a long-held wish since becoming chief conductor in 2002 and was recorded to coincide with the 2015 Sibelius Year.
Mahler's music is about man and nature, and especially about himself. But in Sibelius, you don't feel 'man is there.' If there is a human being, it is in the sense of someone who has entered his own 'thicket of anxiety' and is trapped. That is to say, whoever steps in there may never return. I feel that the essence of Sibelius's music ultimately lies there.
