This CD is Volume 29 of Shogakukan's Vienna Philharmonic: Enchanting Masterpieces series and features Gustav Mahler's masterpiece, Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). Based on Tang Dynasty Chinese poetry, this work, which depicts the impermanence and solitude of life and the return to nature with profound brushstrokes, is a masterpiece that transcends the boundaries between symphony and song, representing the culmination of Mahler's later years.
The performance is by the legendary 1966 recording conducted by Leonard Bernstein, a key figure in the Mahler revival, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vienna Philharmonic's renowned golden sound responds with astonishing beauty and pathos to Bernstein's passionate and rich interpretation. The soloists are also exceptionally brilliant, with the philosophical depth of baritone master Fischer-Dieskau and the radiant, powerful tenor of James King forming a superb contrast. The final movement, Abschied (Farewell), with its fading silence and profound emotion, is a historic masterpiece that shines with supreme brilliance among numerous recordings of this work.
