Life Jacket with Sakura Mark
Life jackets sold in Japan can be broadly divided into those with a Sakura Mark and without a Sakura Mark. Life jackets that have passed safety standards confirmed through testing by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have a Sakura Mark (a symbol of passing type approval tests and inspections).
Why are life jackets without the Sakura Mark sold?
Life jackets can be used in situations other than boarding small vessels. For example, fishing from shore (rock fishing) or using rowboats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, etc. It is not a violation to board these with a life jacket without a Sakura Mark.
Since February 2018, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has mandated the wearing of life jackets with Sakura Marks for all passengers on small vessels.
The対象 (target) is all passengers on small vessels.
This applies not only to the captains of fishing charter boats but also to the passengers.
