Description
This is a lovely souvenir spoon for France . . . except it was made in Connecticut. Very pretty design on the handle representational of the country of France. Design motifs: -The French Medal of Honor [actually the Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honor)] -A banner with the word France -A laurel wreath with the monogram 'RF', which stands for République Française (French Republic), in the center -An olive branch, which symbolises peace -The fasces symbol, which is associated with the exercise of justice and the republic (the bundle of rods and an axe were carried by lictors in Ancient Rome) -Another national emblem, a Fleur-de-lis [translates to flower of the lily (actually, a stylized design of a yellow iris)] -Other scrolling and flora Made by The American Silver Company (and marked on the reverse of the handle), this spoon is likely around 100 years old as the company was absorbed by the International Silver Co. sometime in the 1930's. ~ ~ ~ ~ The American Silver Company (ASC), based in Bristol, Connecticut, was a significant manufacturer of silver-plated flatware and holloware from 1901 until the mid-1930s ~ ~ ~ ~ This spoon was definitely used and not just decor. Spoon bowl has scratches/scuffs from use and storage. I did NOT clean/polish this as some people prefer the natural patina of age, so it will be up to you to polish to your preference. Otherwise, no dents; design is strong; tarnish present. From a smoke-free, healthy home. [991]
