?? AI Description
Tsubame Tsuchioki Copperware (Tsubame Tsuchioki Douki) is a traditional craft that began in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, in the mid-Edo period (mid-18th century). Based on techniques introduced by a craftsman from Sendai, it started with the creation of seamless daily necessities (kettles and pots) using copper mined from Mt. Yahiko. With its high level of skill, loved for many years, it has been designated as a National Important Intangible Cultural Property.
Key Points of History and Characteristics
Origin: In Tsubame, where there was a technique for making Japanese nails during the Edo period, the Tsuchioki technique was passed down by a craftsman from Sendai named Tōshichi during the Meiwa era (1764-1772).
Characteristics: A technique of shaping a single copper plate by hammering it with a mallet (uchiokoshi and uchishibori) to create a seamless form.
Development: First, Kakubei Tamagawa (1799-1872) laid the foundation for it as an industry, and during the Meiji period, it developed from practical items to artistic crafts.
Gyokusendo in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, and others continue to pass down techniques that have lasted for over 200 years to the present day.
