Barley Seeds, 10g, Over 300 Grains, Harvested 2025, Pesticide-Free, Hordeum vulgare, Green Manure
Limited quantity remaining.
---
These are new seeds from organically grown barley, harvested in 2025.
The variety is unknown, but it is used for ornamental purposes due to its beautiful ear shape.
For harvesting the grain, it is sown in autumn, but
it can also be sown in spring for use as green manure or mulch.
If there are leftover seeds, they can be stored in the refrigerator and will germinate without issue for several years.
Around May, if you dry the green ears when the grains are still small, you can create pale green dried flowers.
Some people use the hollow nature of the straw as material for Himmeli.
The straw can also be used as bedding for plants. Because it is hollow, it is less prone to rot and seems to last longer than rice straw.
*Recently, summers have become too hot, and it feels like straw bedding is essential to prevent drying and insulate the soil from heat. For general households without rice paddies, obtaining straw is difficult, and buying it can be quite expensive. Barley straw is very useful.
***While one might see rice paddies, opportunities to see barley cultivation are rare, so wouldn't it be interesting to grow and observe it with children? It doesn't require flooding with water, making it easier to grow than rice.
From a single seed, over 100 grains can be harvested, multiplying more than 100 times. This makes one understand why grains are the staple food of the world.
Potatoes can yield more than 10 times the weight of the seed potato. While it's not solely about how much a single seed multiplies, considering factors like yield per area of farmland and cultivation period is important. Grains also have better storability than tubers. Do any of you remember when even old and very old rice appeared during rice shortages...?***
