Glass Gem Corn was developed in the 1980s by American farmer Carl Barnes, who cross-bred three types of traditional Native American corn: Pawnee Miniature Popcorn, Osage Red, and Osage Gray Horse Corn.

In 1994, Carl met and befriended Greg Shoen at a gathering of heirloom plants, and in 1995, he gave Shoen a handful of Glass Gem seeds.

From then until the early 2000s, the two continued to plant Glass Gem in small plots.
Starting in 2005, Shoen's friend, Jose Lucero, began mixing this corn with Pueblo and Spanish varieties.
This cross-breeding resulted in smaller rainbow corn with deeper colors and increased hardiness.
In 2008, Shoen sent seeds to growers in India, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, and the United States. One recipient used them in an educational program, increasing interest in this corn.
In 2012, photos of Glass Gem began to spread through word-of-mouth.
