How it works...
Most commonly used compressors have a structure similar to a reciprocating engine, where a piston moves back and forth. (Unlike an engine, it compresses air by rotating a crank.)
Naturally, the interior is subjected to harsh conditions due to the heat generated during air compression and the friction heat from the piston's reciprocating motion.
Therefore, oil is typically mixed with the air to improve wear resistance.

Oil-less designs use special processing on the reciprocating parts to enhance wear resistance.

Strictly speaking, since air is being compressed, moisture vaporized in the air can liquefy, potentially causing rust inside the air tools.
In general compressors, the oil contained in the pressurized air protects the inside of air tools. However, with oil-less types, the compressor itself is made with wear resistance, but the inside of air tools can become prone to rust.
In some cases, an adapter may be used to add oil to the air tools.
