This abacus dates back to the late Taisho to early Showa periods, predating current abacus designs. It was passed down through generations and was kept at my family home.
This is a 5-bead type abacus, which is no longer commonly found.
It is large and easy to see, making it good for practice. The calculation method is the same, but the lower beads are rarely used.
The inscription on the back, Tsuma-mago (wife and grandchild), is said to be a message from the husband who was working away from home, thinking of his family. This was from a generation before both spouses worked.
It is in good working condition. Dust has been removed with a broom, but fine details may not be reached, so it will be sold as-is. Please be aware that it may have an old scent.
