Sekikanto are amulets or stone markers inscribed with characters such as 石敢當 (Sekikanto) placed at the end of T-junctions or similar locations. Originating in China, they are found in large numbers in Japan, particularly in the Ryukyu Islands centered around Okinawa Island, and also considerably in Kagoshima Prefecture, including the Satsunan Islands and the Amami Islands. Effect: In Okinawa Prefecture, the significance and effectiveness of these amulets are still deeply believed. Due to the prevalence of T-junctions and Y-junctions in the region, various sizes of newly made Sekikanto can still be seen throughout Okinawa Prefecture today. In these areas, it is believed that Majimun, evil spirits that wander the streets, have a tendency to move in straight lines. Therefore, if they encounter a T-junction or Y-junction, they are believed to enter the house directly opposite. For this reason, Sekikanto are placed at the end of T-junctions and Y-junctions to prevent the intrusion of evil spirits. It is said that evil spirits shatter upon hitting the Sekikanto.
