[What is a Green Fork?]
It is a tool used to repair the indentation created when a ball lands on the green, called a pitch mark (also known as a ball mark).
If pitch marks are left unrepaired, the grass in that area will die, leaving an indentation on the green.
Repair takes time and negatively affects play on the green, such as the roll of putts.
From the perspective of course preservation, it is considered good golf etiquette to repair your own pitch marks, just like divots, and this is the tool used for that purpose.
