[History]
1. The Birth and Retirement of the Hachiroku born in the Taisho Era
• 1922 (Taisho 11): Born at Hitachi, Ltd. Model name 8620 type, engine number 58654. It was the first mass-produced tender steam locomotive for passenger use in Japan and was affectionately known as Hachiroku.
• Dedicated to Kyushu: From its birth to its retirement, it continuously ran throughout Kyushu, including Nagasaki, Saga, and Kumamoto.
• 1975 (Showa 50): Once retired with the end of the steam locomotive era. Afterward, it rested quietly (static preservation) at the Hitoyoshi City SL Exhibition Hall in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
2. 1988: A Miraculous Revival and the Exposition
• Revival Project: Driven by the passionate desire to run a steam locomotive in Kyushu again, a large-scale restoration began at the Kokura Factory (now Kokura General Rolling Stock Center) in 1987.
• World Fire Country Exposition (1988): In conjunction with this exposition held in Kumamoto, it made a dramatic comeback as **SL Aso Boy.**
• Birth of the Commemorative Model: This model was produced to commemorate the Revival in 1988, or the **Kyushu Exposition** of that time. Amidst the fervor of that era, only 300 units were made for a limited number of collectors, making it a true testament to its revival.
