EF510: Active in hauling freight trains!
The EF510 is a dual-voltage electric locomotive that debuted in 2002 for the Japan Sea coast line. Nicknamed RED THUNDER, it was introduced to replace the EF81 used in the same section. In 2010, the EF510 500 series, belonging to JR East, appeared for use with the limited express Hokutosei and Cassiopeia sleeper trains. However, with the discontinuation of regular services for Hokutosei in 2015 and Cassiopeia the following year, all units were transferred to JR Freight's Toyama Locomotive Depot. In addition to the Japan Sea coast line, they are active in hauling freight trains as far west as Okayama and in the Chubu region.
The red 0-series without the JRF mark on the side, and units 509 and 510, which were transferred from JR East to JR Freight and repainted in solid silver, are now available in HO gauge.
