Pair Vintage Sanford Japan Porcelain Square Plates 1666 Birds Flowers Dish

Add a touch of Mid-Century elegance to your home with this vintage porcelain square decorative dish produced by Sanford in Japan. Displaying a beautiful Chinoiserie style aesthetic, the plate features a bright white glaze decorated with a hand-accented illustration of two colorful songbirds perched among flowering branches. The design is framed with intricate botanical borders along the beveled, octagonal corners and a thin olive green edge line. A distinct textured, molded relief pattern runs through the ceramic body, adding a lovely dimensional quality. During the post-WWII era, the United States saw a massive boom in the appreciation and import of high-quality Japanese porcelain decorative wares. Specialty boutique importers like Sanford partnered with skilled Japanese ceramic workshops to create delicate giftware, vanity trays, and trinket dishes featuring traditional Asian botanical and wildlife themes. These pieces were highly popular bridal shower, anniversary, and holiday gifts throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This piece is item number 1666 and retains its original shiny gold foil manufacturer label on the reverse side reading Sanford Japan. It also features a secondary vintage retail foil label from Village Gallery Antiques, showcasing its storied journey as a treasured collectible. It functions beautifully as a vanity catchall tray, jewelry dish, or display plate on a gallery wall or hutch shelf. Minor enamel loss, shown in pictures.
