Antique Japanese Satsuma Moriage Figural Vase Elephant Handles 12"
Unidentified Japanese Workshop
Antique Japanese Satsuma-Style Moriage Figural Vase with Elephant-Head Handles, circa 1920s–1940s. Striking early 20th-century Japanese export ceramic vase featuring colorful hand-painted figural scenes surrounded by intricate geometric decoration in red-orange, cream, pale blue, black and gold. Raised enamel or moriage-style accents add texture throughout the design. The vase is particularly distinctive for its pair of sculpted elephant-head handles extending from the neck to the shoulder. A finely crackled glaze covers the cream-colored ground, with gilt accents highlighting portions of the figures and decoration. The interior bears a hand-painted red Japanese maker/decorator mark; the specific workshop has not been identified. Measurements: approximately 12 tall × 5.5 diameter at widest point. Top rim/opening measures approximately 3.25 in diameter and base measures approximately 3.75 in diameter. Weight: approximately 1 lb 15 oz. The crackled surface is characteristic of this type of Japanese pottery and contributes to its aged appearance. Visible age-related wear, including some wear and discoloration to the elephant handles, rim and gilt decoration, is consistent with the age of the piece. Please review all photographs closely for condition and decorative details. An eye-catching example of early Japanese export pottery and a wonderful display piece for a collection of Satsuma-style ceramics, Japanese art pottery or Asian decorative arts. 7432
