In Japanese dance, fans are chosen to match the specific stage and performance. A fan can be described as the smallest stage prop, used to express the world of the performance. It's too valuable to be dismissed as just a simple prop; it takes a great deal of time and effort, with artisans handcrafting each one. It often takes over a month to complete.
Origin of Hosen-do Kūami
Hosen-do began when Kūami, a fan craftsman from Kyoto, moved to Edo, a newly developed area, during the Genroku era when Japanese dance flourished with the popularity of Kabuki. He established his shop in Asakusa, near the Kannon temple. Since then, it has continued to be a specialty shop for Japanese dance fans.
