*About Doshinmen:
Doshinmen are folk toys created to bring the Dōsojin (road deity), who is enshrined at roadsides such as mountain passes, crossroads, and village borders to ward off evil spirits and epidemics, into the home.
These masks are created in parallel with the Jūni Choku (Twelve Directs), one of the calendrical notations that indicate good or bad fortune, dates, and directions recorded in history. Each mask has a different expression imagined from its meaning.
They are valuable woodcrafts as folkloric materials, expressing various wishes such as protection for travelers and matchmaking, with primitive, eccentric, wild, and free expressions, a sense of wonder, and simplicity embodied in the masks.
