October Birthstone. Pretty and petite this opal triplet is hallmarked 925 and weighs just shy of 1.4 grams of sterling and stone. The Bottom Layer (Dark Backing): Usually made from a dark material like black industrial glass (Vitrolite), black onyx, or ironstone. This dark backdrop is crucial because it makes the colors of the thin opal slice pop vibrantly. The Middle Layer (Precious Opal): A paper-thin sliver of genuine crystal opal (often less than 1mm thick). This provides the signature play-of-color. The Top Layer (Clear Cap): A clear, domed quartz, glass, or plastic cap. It serves two purposes: it protects the delicate opal from scratches and magnifies the color underneath.
