The history of the Kiji-guruma (pheasant cart) is old, originating from a legend around 806 AD when Dengyo Daishi got lost in the mountains where Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located, and a pheasant guided him. It is characterized by being carved from pine wood dried for over a year, then colored, and assembled without nails. It has long been considered a charm for good luck, matchmaking, and family harmony. Green and red represent the male, and red and black represent the female.
