Patriotic Iroha Karuta
Designated by the Foundation, Japan Junior Citizens' Culture Association

This is a historical document issued in 1943 (Showa 18) during the Pacific War. It was created by the Foundation, Japan Junior Citizens' Culture Association, an external organization of the government, to teach children (junior citizens) patriotism and wartime attitudes.

It shows that the content was decided by an official organization established in 1941 to control children's culture and promote war cooperation.
Patriotism (Aikoku):
This term, meaning love of country, was used at the time to boost morale for the war effort.

Content of the Karuta at the Time
The selected verses reflected the social conditions of the time.

Explanation of the Content:
I: Ise no Kamikaze, Tekikoku Kōfuku (Divine wind of Ise, enemy surrender)
Ha: Hai de Hajimaru Gohōkō (Yes begins your service)
Ro: Robata de Kiku Senzo no Hanashi (Listening to ancestral stories by the fireside)

This is an extremely valuable antique document for understanding the education children received during wartime.

* The circumstances of its acquisition are unknown.
It was in a box, so the karuta itself is in good condition. However, these are black and white karuta made of thick paper, and their shapes are not uniform, appearing as if roughly cut by an amateur.
As this has been stored at home for a long time, there may be some age-related deterioration.
Please consider this before making a purchase.
