Shimofusa Toys are traditional crafts founded by Setsutaro Matsumoto in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. He built a unique world of Shimofusa Toys with earthenware dolls formed by hand-modeling clay and fired in a primitive kiln, as well as papier-mâché dolls made by layering Japanese paper.
He created over 1,500 works before his passing in November 2004. Their simple charm and warmth gained great acclaim, and he received the 1st Nouvelle Culture Award in 1988. His works continue to be loved by many people to this day.
