Description
The Tarahumara, also known as Raramuri, are the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountain range of Chihuahua, Mexico. They have been making this style of pottery for thousands of years, made by hand without a wheel. They start by pinching and coiling the clay, then scraping or burnishing with a wood stick or stone to smooth the clay before firing. This is a unique old piece of the Tarahumara people, handcrafted sinew/rawhide wrapped Clay Pottery. Made by hand in the traditional pinch & coil way, without a potters wheel. Without a kiln. A week long traditional process. This small fired, thick clay vessel is usable as well as beautiful. It weighs 1.4 lbs and is about 5.5” tall and about 4.5” round at the base, an absolutely beautiful piece.
