Kishi Kyūgyū: A hanging scroll depicting a black ox
Knight's Ox
This is a hanging scroll (Collectibles) with a drawing of an ox.
Overall: Approx. 171 cm (height) x 42 cm (width)
Artwork itself: Approx. 100 cm (height) x 36.5 cm (width)
Purchased by my parents in Showa 60 (1985), the Year of the Ox. This year was a turning point in history, with many significant events such as the Japan Airlines Flight 123 crash and the privatization of Japanese National Railways (along with the privatization of NTT and Japan Tobacco). As of 2026, people born in this year will be 40 or 41 years old.
It has been stored for many years in a drawer, rolled up and unprotected, at home.
Thank you for your understanding.
In the traditional style of sumi-e (ink wash painting) or Japanese painting, it depicts a black ox relaxing.
This motif is often displayed as a Zen painting theme, similar to the Ten Oxherding Pictures, or as the Chinese zodiac sign Ox.
There is a written signature and a seal, indicating the artist and the origin of the work.
