Thank you for looking.

This is a mekugi (peg) for a Japanese sword.
It is said that mekugi made of bamboo (aged for 3 years or more) is particularly good for Japanese swords.
The reason for this is that with bamboo mekugi, even if the sword is handled incorrectly, the mekugi will absorb the shock by breaking, preventing cracks or nicks from forming on the blade.
This is scientifically supported by the fact that aged bamboo has appropriate elasticity, and even if the mekugi breaks, the bamboo fibers remain, preventing the blade from coming loose.

These are mekugi made from aged bamboo (set of 5).
These are thick mekugi, with a head of approximately 5mm and a length of approximately 4.5cm.
*Note: The head diameter may be less than 5mm or more than 5mm; it is not exactly 5mm!

These can be used for both shirasaya (plain saya) and koshirae (mounted saya).
However, since each shirasaya and koshirae has different dimensions, some minor adjustments may be necessary to achieve a perfect fit.
Nevertheless, in my experience, replacing or adjusting the mekugi often improves the looseness of the shirasaya or koshirae.
It has long been said that making mekugi was a samurai's accomplishment.

As these are natural materials, the colors may vary from dark to light.
We will select a set of 5 from our collection and ship them to you.
